ARTifariti 2016: 10th International Art and Human Rights Meeting in Western Sahara

Younes 'Ze' Zemmouri  / Shame/عيب /

“Censorship is saying: 'I'm the one who says the last sentence. Whatever you say, the conclusion is mine.' But the internet is like a tree that is growing. The people will always have the last word - even if someone has a very weak, quiet voice. Such power will collapse because of a whisper.” Ai Weiwei

Inspired by Chinese contemporary artist and his activism in human rights, Younes used calligraphies of Arabic words that mean Shame to cover the substantial body parts of different Greek and Roman sculptures. By implying disgrace, voyeurism, indiscretion and guilt in how the Medias play a major part when reflecting and conflicting information, this series is a way to denounce a certain duplicity lying beneath both freedom of expression of the West and socio-cultural ethics of the East.
